Ceramic bearing surfaces, like other bearing surfaces, have their advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage of ceramic-on-ceramic bearing surfaces is that they have the best wear properties of all bearing surfaces due to their low coefficient of friction. 
Additional advantages include inert wear particles and high biocompatibility. 
Disadvantages of ceramic bearing surfaces include stripe wear, squeaking, the possibility of catastrophic fracture, and relatively high cost.
